The vision of our school, and associated values, set out to clarify what our school community is working towards to develop our students as confident, connected and actively involved lifelong learners. It is about what we do on a daily basis; our deliberate acts of teaching; reflecting on our students, parents and community the intention of the New Zealand Curriculum.
The Values of the NZC at work in our school culture:
Excellence - Our school encourages and celebrates excellence. Our motto is that we strive to achieve our best. Our PRIDE homework programme (Y4/5/6 in 2009 and Y3/4/5/6 in 2010) clearly strives towards gaining excellence. Teachers strive to recognise excellence in student achievement at weekly assemblies and involve the media in our successes.
Innovation - Our school embraces new thinking and ideas. We provide opportunities for students to show leadership and present new ways of doing things. Across learning areas we encourage innovation e.g the PRIDE home learning ways.
Inquiry and Curiosity - We foster students wonderment and awe about the world we share. We guide discussions and role model effective questioning. Effective questioning promotes higher order thinking and deeper understanding from students. We aim to capture teachable moments whereby the curiosity from students is built upon and becomes a shared learning experience.
Diversity - We acknowledge students with special needs, abilities and cultural differences. Our assemblies celebrate times when students have shown a particular disposition that deserves special mention and links back to the school vision. Our programmes show inclusion and we scaffold to accomodate needs.
Equity - A shared culture is promoted. Access to resources is readily available to all, i.e class pencil sets. Teachers encourage high trust throughout and a shared, collaborative use of resources that promote teamwork and effective time management.
