Newsletter Week 2, Term 3

Principal Comment
Kia ora and welcome back to all our children, parents and families. This week I am seeing lots of our children displaying our unique ICARES school values and it is great to see. I would like to warmly welcome Miss Craw to our school who is teaching in Discovery room and her two children Toby and Zane.

Our value focus for Term 3 is Encourage. All teachers have had discussions in their class about this value and what does it mean and look like at Tahuna School.

Again this term we are focusing on the key competency of ‘Participating and belonging’ A big part of this area of learning is integrating our localised curriculum. We are proud to share with you our school pepeha. Pepeha is a way of introducing yourself in maori. It tells people who you are by sharing your connections with the people and places that are important to you.

Ko Tainui te waka
My canoe is Tainui

Ko Mangawara te awa
My river is Mangawara

Ko Hapuakohe te maunga
My Mountain is Hapuakohe

Ko Waiti te marae
My Marae is Waiti

Ko Ngati Paoa te iwi
My tribe is Ngati Paoa

Ko Tahuna te kura
My school is Tahuna School

Also to support participating and belonging we have a number of events planned. Please see dates to remember further below in our newsletter.

Camp
The first information letter about the senior camp (Discovery Room) went out on seesaw. Our senior camp is in Term 4 and it will be a great opportunity for our seniors to have an outdoor education experience. The camp is at Finlay Park, Cambridge.

Wheels Day
Wheels Wednesday is always a great day for our children and it’s fantastic to see so many children bringing wheels to have fun on. Just a quick reminder on Wheels Wednesday the children who want to use a scooter, skateboard, ripstick or drift trike must bring shoes and a helmet as these need to be worn, Thank you.

Bible in Schools
Information about the bible in schools programme and an Opt-In form will be going home with your child today. If you would like your child to take part in the Launchpad programme please fill in the Opt-In form and return to school by Thursday the 11th August. Tahuna School previously had the programme running however due to covid health measures it was put on hold. Now we are in a position to welcome back the bible in schools teachers.

Property Update
The major project funding has been allocated to go towards our Court Cover Shelter. Due to supply issues and job hold ups the project has not started yet. This will be an exciting addition to our school facilities for many years to come. When the first stage is complete the court will be 2/5 covered. We will continue to fundraise and allocate funding to complete the whole project in due course.

Help
If you have an empty large appliance box we would happily take it. It will be used as a backdrop for the school disco. The school disco will be a fundraiser for our senior camp. The date is to be advised.
